Facing Fear and Finding Freedom
Above is the image of our DIY Natural Swimming Pond - slowly we have been adding the finishing touches…
Today, it was me versus my fear. I made a wild, unexpected decision this morning—a leap into discomfort for the sake of my physical and mental health. It all began with a simple but bold declaration, one that solidified my commitment and left no room for backing down. I said out loud, “I am jumping in the pond… naked.” And just like that, there was no turning back.
Now, keep in mind: it’s October 31st, and that water is cold—piercingly cold. I started lacing up my water shoes, my heart pounding, a wild mix of excitement and fear swirling inside me. But this moment, this ridiculous and exhilarating challenge, was all about confronting discomfort head-on.
I glanced over at my husband, and there it was—a smirk spreading across his face. Was he entertained? Probably. Was he considering going for it too? Definitely. Before I could even process what was happening, he bolted, sprinting straight for the water. He leapt in, and the cold water stole his breath. The shock on his face was priceless.
Meanwhile, there I was, standing on our pond’s “mermaid rock,” staring at the freezing water, feeling that familiar wave of hesitation. But then I heard it: that small voice in the back of my mind whispering, “Just… do… it.” Before any more thoughts of fear could invade, I took the plunge. I leapt into the icy water, and the shock was instantaneous—sharp and breath-stealing.
But then something else awoke inside me: sheer, uninhibited happiness. Instead of letting the cold drag me down, I took off running and laughing, feeling more alive than I had in ages. It was like tapping into a childhood joy I hadn’t felt in years. My inner child cheered me on, delighted by the adventure, and I found myself chasing after my husband, laughing uncontrollably at the sight of us both, soaking wet and wildly free.
And my heart? It was swelling with pride. This man who has grown so much beside me, the one I married, was out there being just as wild and bold as I was. He’s come so far since we first met, and watching him embrace these adventures fills me with more joy than I can put into words.
Afterward, we climbed into the hot tub, still buzzing with the joy of what we’d just done. We crushed our fear today. We took a leap—literally—and we came out on the other side, more alive, more connected, and so much happier.
It’s one more day of living in our youth instead of getting another day closer to comfort and age. Every deep breath, every wild adventure, every leap into the unknown—this is how we own our fear, how we keep growing, and how we keep life exhilarating.

Cold Plunge Gear and Equipment
When providing recommendations, I’m thinking of the “lifestyle shifter” and the “I’m interested, but skeptical” types. If you plan on testing it out before taking the leap completely…I get you. My first suggestion would be trying the transition in the shower water from hot, warm, then cool. You can gradually do this daily. When this stage was my stepping stone, I also developed a manta. I repeated, “I CAN DO THIS! YOU ARE STRONG!” Let me tell you…when I believed and I was the one pushing myself for improvement - it changed things completely. So no matter where you begin on your journey, be kind to yourself and have grace. I know you can do this!
Of course, since I am jumping into a pond with river rocks (and if you are too) - I would definitely recommend water shoes that will protect your feet. Rocks plus cold feet equal pain.
I also enjoying wearing a robe on the way outside. Nothing will psyche me out like already being cold before I even make it outside. I like to make a habit of putting my water shoes on the boot dryer after I jump in the pond to ensure next time I will be successful (and I don’t mentally talk myself out of it). Preparation has been key to put me in the mode of “Just Do It” - I make all sorts of healing plans when I am comfortable. It helps me remember the goal before the “time to endure”.
Now, if this is a life style you want to dedicate yourself to - there are ice baths that are inflatable as well. I think these are a nice alternative for athletes on-the-go or for someone wanting to try out before anything permanent.
Wellness and Recovery
I completely understand it is hard to obtain a permanent hot tub for your environment. There are electrical requirements, creating a level space among other details to consider like costs. However - there are options that do provide flexibility and best of all…comfort. Inflatable hot tubs are known for their ease of set-up and ability to be packed away.
There is also an amazing healing quality to this - making it the purpose we want to do this. The mental clarity that it brings is sensational. It helps me tremendously with my TBI (traumatic brain injury), which primarily affects my concentration. The intense sensation forces you to be fully present, clearing mental fog and improving concentration. So that’s a win!
The physical benefits are just as awesome. I saw a quote once that said, “Inflammation is good, but not when it’s chronic” - the cold water constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling, making it effective for relieving sore muscles, joint pain, and injuries. Which is a perfect reason why athletes do it after an intense workout. Now let’s talk about circulation - you know…what affects your skin health, energy levels and metabolic function. The shock of the cold water increases blood flow as the body warms itself up, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells and flushing out toxins. It also strengthens the immune system - hello increase of white blood cell production! Means your body can fight off illnesses! Ka-POW! And…cold exposure can support fat loss? Hell yeah!
As if those benefits weren’t enough - we have nervous system regulation. It activates the vagus nerve, which calms the nervous system and promotes a state of rest and recovery. It can also balance out those pesky stress hormones - reducing feelings of overwhelm and supporting emotional stability.
How It Feels
At first, the cold takes your breath away, and your instincts scream to get out. But as you focus on your breathing and surrender to the sensation, the discomfort transforms into clarity, joy, and a sense of invigoration. You emerge from the water not only feeling alive but also deeply refreshed - like you’ve hit a mental and physical “reset” button.
And remember…you got this! Face your fear and invest in your freedom.
